Gotta Love Avocados!

Hello Readers!

I get asked a lot of questions about fat content in the diet. It seems that whenever I recommend adding avocado to a client recipe, I get that look of fear. What do you mean I can lose weight if I eat avocado??

Well, it is certainly true that avocado is a plant-based source of fat in the diet. It is also true that avocado is a highly nutritious and digestible type of fat for human consumption. Do I recommend eating a whole avocado everyday? Not necessarily, but including a half of an avocado (or even a whole one) in your meals a few or more times a week can be a healthy and delicious way to add texture to a typically boring salad or wrap. I do recommend, however, not mixing multiple types of fat together in one meal. For digestion and weight-loss purposes, this mentality seems to work best.

What’s so great about avocados? Take a look…

  • Avocados are bursting with vitamins: A, B-complex, C, E, K, and folic acid.

  • Avocados are rich in minerals: magnesium, copper, iron, calcium, and potassium.

  • Avocados provide ALL of the essential amino acids needed to be taken in through dietary means.

  • Avocados contain more protein than cow’s milk!

  • Avocados are an easily-digestible source of healthy fat (like Omegas 3 and 6), with NO cholesterol.

  • Avocados are 74% water! (This accounts for their easy digestability)

  • Avocados are one of the few dietary fat sources that are also alkalizing to the body.

Sounds good to this girl!

Here is a simple recipe that is avocado-based, and ideal to use on salads, with veggie crudité, or to serve at parties with family and friends…

Healthier You Groovy Guacamole

Ingredients:

  • 2-4 ripe avocados

  • 1-2 tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 handful scallions, chopped

  • ½ tsp. garlic powder

  • Juice of 1 lime or lemon

  • ¼ tsp. sea salt

Preparation:

  1. Place all avocado and spices in a bowl with a flat bottom and mash it with a fork.

  2. Add in tomatoes and scallions and stir well.

  3. This dish will brown on the areas exposed to air within a few hours, so serve it shortly after making it or just stir again before serving. Keep refrigerated (You could also prepare this in a blender with a handful of raw spinach which will keep the greener color for a longer period of time).

There you have it…easy, healthy deliciousness that anyone will love!

Hope you all have a wonderful evening!

Lisa
